With the fashion for image-tank style devices, I'm surprised more people don't consider the virtues of a laptop instead. A device with a 20Gb hard drive and a 2" screen typically costs something in the £3-400 range. The same money would buy an older secondhand laptop, and about £200 more buys a modern one, with greater hard drive capacity and a full-sized screen. The laptop also does more than storage, of course - you can do you sorting and post-processing on it. You can email photos to friends. And you can upload to photo sites and create webpages. I have long gone for very portable laptops, so for me it was a done deal: my existing laptop already fitted the bill. |
| Of course, the laptop isn't as portable. But most people only carry an image-tank when travelling, and a laptop is perfectly feasible then. And if you want something truly portable, it is available at a price. My laptop is sufficiently small and light to fit into my backpack, so I tend to carry it routinely, enabling me to review photos in a cafe and process them on a train, plane or in a hotel room. My present laptop is a Sony Vaio. These are small, light and stylish - but chronically unreliable. After-sales service is also abysmal, so I wouldn't buy another one. Fortunately the Vaio range now has some rivals in the ultra-compact category. A recurring and tedious debate on photo forums is Windows vs Mac. The Mac side tends to be populated by fanatics who haven't used a Windows machine since about 1995 and proudly list Mac features which have been standard on Windows machines for years. The Windows side tends to be populated by people who are dismissive of Macs without having used one at all. I've used both Mac and Windows machines. These days, comparing OSX and XP SP2, I don't see much to choose between them. It's very much like the Nikon vs Canon debate: there are some objective differences between them that you should consider, but either one will do the job perfectly well. It's really down to which one feels right for you. I would, though, encourage anyone considering a portable storage device to have a think about the feasibility of getting a laptop instead. |
